The Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has called on the government to significantly increase investment in flood control infrastructure to address the country's persistent flooding challenges.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One News on Thursday, June 11, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Local Government and Decentralisation Committee expressed concern over the growing frequency and severity of flooding incidents across major cities in Ghana.
According to him, the recurring floods require urgent and sustained infrastructure interventions rather than political debates and partisan discussions.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye, who previously served as Minister for Works and Housing, emphasized that flooding remains a national challenge with devastating consequences for lives, property, and economic activities. He stressed that the issue should not be politicised, as it affects citizens irrespective of political affiliation.
He recalled that former presidential candidate and current President, John Dramani Mahama, had on several occasions criticised the previous administration over flooding incidents and pledged stronger interventions to address the problem if elected.
The Bantama legislator noted that the increasing occurrence of floods across the country underscores the need for comprehensive drainage systems, improved urban planning, and adequate funding for flood mitigation projects.
He further urged the government to prioritize long-term solutions aimed at protecting communities vulnerable to flooding, adding that effective flood management requires continuous investment and a coordinated national approach.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye's remarks come amid renewed public concerns over flooding in several parts of the country following recent heavy rains.
