DETTY DECEMBER IN DECLINE: A FAILURE OF VISION AND MARKETING

I write to express my deep concern and disappointment over the current state of Detty December, an initiative that once stood as a flagship celebration of Ghana’s culture, creativity, and global appeal.

Detty December has, over the years, drawn thousands from the diaspora back home, significantly boosting tourism, hospitality, entertainment, and the local economy. Under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, it flourished—projecting Ghana as a preferred December destination and showcasing the very best of our music, culture, and hospitality.

Unfortunately, the noticeable decline in participation and vibrancy this year reflects poor planning, weak marketing, and a lack of strategic direction. This downturn threatens not only local businesses but also the unique atmosphere and international attention that December in Ghana has come to represent.

The current NDC government must urgently refocus its efforts. Revitalising Detty December will require effective marketing, stronger partnerships with local stakeholders, and a more inclusive, well-curated programme. Above all, they must set aside ego and be willing to learn from what previously worked. Seeking guidance and collaboration from those who successfully built the brand would be a step in the right direction.

Detty December is bigger than politics—it is a national asset. However, history will clearly remember that the New Patriotic Party laid its foundation and elevated it to global relevance.
